PHL Ambassador to Argentina H.E. Amelita C. Aquino with members of the COA Audit Team, Embassy personnel, and members of the Filipino community at the Philippine booth.
17 November 2014 – The Filipino community in Buenos Aires, in close cooperation with the Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires, participated in the city’s annual ¨Fiesta de las Colectividades: Un Encuentro Multicultural¨ (Festival of Communities: A Multicultural Gathering) which was held from 08 to 09 November 2014.
The festival, which received more than 20,000 visitors, showcased the different immigrant communities in Argentina mainly through song and dance presentations, traditional crafts and products, and gastronomy. This year marks the first time that the Philippines participated in the said event.
The Filipino community in Buenos Aires, represented by the Comunidad Filipino en Argentina (CONFIAR) organized a Philippine booth with Philippine-made products and Filipino food. CONFIAR members also participated in the festival’s cultural program with a well-received presentation of traditional Filipino dances (“Tinikling” and “Bakya Mo Neneng”).
In order to make the Philippine booth more interactive, foreign guests were given the opportunity to learn how to dance the “Tinikling” which they found fun, exciting, and a bit “dangerous.” The members of CONFIAR gamely acted as dance instructors.
Mr. Virgilio Mendoza, a prominent member of the Filipino community and considered one of the oldest Filipino immigrants to Argentina having lived in Buenos Aires since 1973, was given a certificate of recognition by the festival organizers.
The festival was organized by the Argentine National Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior and Transport in cooperation with the Argentinian Association of Communities together with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Argentine Catholic Commission Foundation for Migrants (FCCAM).
