Filipinos in Argentina Celebrate Philippine Independence and the

Opening of Sentro Rizal in Buenos Aires

Filipinos gathered at the Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires on 21 June 2015 to commemorate the 117th anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence and the 154th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal with the opening of the Sentro Rizal at

the embassy.

After a mass officiated by Filipino priest Fr. Crisanto Cipres, the   program was opened with the singing of the Philippine national anthem and remarks by Ambassador Ma. Amelita C. Aquino who affirmed that the aspirations of Filipinos for a progressive and inclusive nation is now within reach as indicated in this year’s Independence Day theme: Tagumpay sa Pagbabagong Nasimulan, Abot-Kamay na ng Bayan (Triumphs through Reforms, Within Nation’s Reach).

Speaking about the Sentro Rizal, Ambassador Aquino said that it will serve as a place for overseas Filipinos and second generation Filipinos to learn and understand more about Dr. Rizal and the Philippines through the materials at the center as well as future activities that will be organized by the embassy. The Ambassador’s remarks was followed by the reading of the President’s message by Consul Ma. Carmela Teresa Cabreira.

The event was enlivened by the performance of the dance salakot by Filipino community members and  Filipino songs rendered by Cheryl Metillo that brought tears to the eyes of some long-time Filipino residents in Argentina.

The Sentro Rizal was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Jonathan Paul Cruz and Cassandra Granada, children of embassy personnel.

The day was marked by camaraderie and fellowship among members of the Filipino community who savored the Filipino dishes prepared by the Embassy for the event.END.
